The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1796: Superman v.2 #20, August 1988
I have always liked the way in which Cliffe Steele concretizes one of Superman's mythical names, the Man of Steel. This is actually a pretty clever premise, involving the notion that a lot of the robotic individuals in the DCU must get their replacement parts from the same suppliers. A great story would be of a robotics expert who becomes a third-party supplier to the Metal Men or Cliff.
So a three-pronged battle amongst men of steel, Cliff being controlled by Metallo via their Luthorcorp-manufactured parts. Cool.
I love Superman, and I love the Doom Patrol, so you'd think this comic would tickle me pink, but it didn't. A recent interview I read called Byrne's reboot of Superman in the 80s toothless, and it really is. I actually see the Byrne years as a direct precursor of the Henry Cavill Superman films, and toothless is a good way to describe them, despite the ultraviolence at the end. I wonder if anyone's ever done a comparison of them?
Also, Scott Fisher heats Metallo up so much that his brain starts cooking inside his metal body. Fucking ow. Fisher has potential that has never, to my knowledge, been explored.
More to follow.
