The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1557: Showcase #95, Oct-Nov. 1977

I'm going to show you the first page of this issue.

Arani.
Is.
From.
India.

She's explicitly a Person of Colour in the series. You'd think they could have made a bit of an effort.

Something I appreciate about the story that Mr. Kupperberg and Mr. Staton are telling here is that it very much pays homage to the team's origin, in that General Immortus is the antagonist, at least for the first two issues. Though I don't think the creators grasp the tone or atmosphere of the series, it's nice to see that they are fans of the original material. Kupperberg has explicitly said he likes the Doom Patrol. In fact, I think you'd have to love them to want to write them. I like how the show worked Immortus' name in - you caught it, didn't you? - and, honestly, they mixed Niles with the General in a lot of ways. They share a purpose now. Interestingly, according to this story, Niles has already discovered an immortality serum, one he uses on Arani, which partially accounts for her powers (somehow). I'd love to sit down with the showrunners and see how deeply they immersed themselves in the comics - I have to imagine that it was pretty deep. I've picked out a few things that only someone whose read this too many times might pick up - unless I'm just imagining things.

Have I mentioned that I love what the Doom Patrol does to my brain?

"A mysterious benefactor has supplied me with unlimited funds, Arani, to develop an immortality serum for him..."
