The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1307: Vector #1, July 1986
My family were pretty early adopters of computer technology. I think our earliest one was around 1982 or 83, the Odyssey II system. Very much an educational tool, it came with a few games that were all about math and reading. But my Dad had the bug, and we kept up, as much as we could, with technological trends.
The trouble with Vector is that it seems to be written from the perspective of someone who didn't, even though it's a partially computer-generated comic. The story can't seem to decide if it's in favour of or against computers, and after reading the first issue, I'm not sure which side it's on either. The gentleman on the cover seems to get strange, precognitive powers from a computer that his girlfriend brings home for him one day. A computer that has keys with ancient Druidic markings. When they try to take the computer back, the store has vanished.
I guess, at the time, computers were the cutting edge of technology. And, I suppose if I'm to be honest, it probably felt a little overwhelming to me at the time. I was a sponge-like child, so I can't imagine how overwhelming it would be to someone a generation removed from me. Gotta check that privilege every now and again.
I've got the second issue of this series, so perhaps I'll read it tomorrow and see if the series makes a decision on how it feels about this new-fangled technology!
More to come...
