The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 970: Avengers v.1 #278, April 1987
Weeks have passed.
The siege of Avengers Mansion happened over the course of about a day and a half, but the story took just over half a year to tell, allowing for a Sub-Marinal detour. And, let's be honest, all of the Avengers needed some recuperation time after that nightmare.
Which is pretty much what today's comic tells us, and then it starts, without telling us, to build a new team. The Thing has returned to the Fantastic Four, Hercules is still comatose, and Doctor Druid's been hanging out with the Black Knight.
And, sadly, the Wasp is getting tired of the duties of chairperson. It feels right that she's stepping down, as Stern's tenure on the book is also coming to an end. The shift of chairpersons and of creative teams usually signals significant changes for a book, and especially a team book. Different writers have different ideas of who would work well together, and who would be fun to write, and, let's be honest, there's a plethora of under-used characters in the Marvel U at any given time. But the interesting thing about this shift in the team is that it's coming part way through a writer's tenure. Sure, Stern's about to get kicked off the book, but chances are, 8 months before, he didn't know that. So he's building a new team, with a new dynamic, having taken his former team to their limits in the last arc. We get one more full arc from Mr. Stern, and then we're done. Which, actually, really sucks. I've been enjoying the heck out of his Avengers.
But who will lead the team?
To be continued.
