The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1655: B-Sides #1, November 2002

Is this the comic I need to revive? Perhaps.

I don't really know where and when I picked this up, but it was likely for the amazing Sam Keith cover art. Having now read the comic, I think I love the character of Fateball, and I've got all sorts of story ideas rattling around in my head.

B-Sides is an intriguing idea. Whereas most Marvel superheroes are situated in the increasingly crowded New York of the Marvel U, B-Sides takes place in a small town, and trades on the idea of having a local super-team to handle any problems that might arise. And though the name seems to suggest that the team's powers are somehow minor ones, unlike many of their more mainstream counterparts, the B-Sides have powers that are actually interesting. Jughandle, for example, can pop himself out of normal space-time for short stretches in order to witness alternate timelines play out. Mize corrupts things, from material objects to relationships, and Fateball is a master in hand-to-hand combat and has a Magic 8-Ball that will answer any question. I'm super-intrigued by the fateball.

I only have a single issue of the series, which ran for 3 issues. As far as I can tell, the characters never show up again, aside from a brief mention of Fateball in the aftermath of Civil War.

Ripe for reviving? I think so. Now....how to get Marvel to pay attention to me....

"You know the Fateball's never wrong."
