The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1363: The Forbidden Airlock #1, 1992

A little taste from my adult comics collection, and a very odd one at that. Two of the stories in here appear to be repurposed romance comics, their dialogue shifted to make the tales much more amusing. At least, that's what I think they are. The credits claim that the writers of the pieces "discovered and distorted" the originals. They're amusing, kind of in line with the Last Kiss comics.

But the balance of the issue is where things really shine. These three tales, written and drawn by Charlie Summers (who has no other writing credits in the GCD), remind me of the wonderful stories in Xxxenophile in tone, though these are much more the fantasies one might entertain in adolescence rather than the science fiction vignettes of Phil Foglio's series. I was actually surprised by the attention not only to the erotic aspects of the stories, but to the characterization. Though the point of the story was to tell a sexy tale, each of the characters was, in the small amount of space available, fleshed out. Pun intended fully. You didn't feel like the women in the story were simply props, nor do you feel like the men in the story are barely-concealed rapists. There is something innocent and curious about these stories, and that's an aspect we very rarely see in adult comics. It's a pity this was the only issue.

More to come...
