The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1361: Superman (1939) #181, November 1965
Slightly different from the Superman stories I was reading a few weeks back, but pretty great nonetheless.
My copy of this comic looks very different from that picture. I picked it up probably about 20 years ago at a comic shop in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, while I was in town for a wedding. I grabbed a few old Superman comics there, all of them in pretty terrible shape, but still eminently readable.
I wonder if the Superman of 2965 ever shows up in any of the more continuity-bound tales that follow this era of the title? According to the end of his story, there'll be more next month, though a little research shows that he actually next appears in the June issue of Action Comics the next year. Four appearances seems to be all Klar Ken T-5477 gets.
The lead story in today's issue is interesting, and tells the tale of a young woman who finds a destroyed Superman robot and adapts its technology into powers of her own. Of course, her ploy is to get Superman to take notice so she can meet him, but it does deal with one of those things that very rarely does get dealt with: the garbage that superhero battles leave behind. There's an excellent Marvel One-Shot from the cinematic universe in which this very thing is addressed, as two petty criminals find a Chitauri weapon and manage to get it working again. I'm surprised that we don't get more stories like this, even as epilogue-style back-ups, because I have to believe that this sort of thing happens ALL THE TIME. Superheroes are very messy.
More to come...
