The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1314: Syphons v.2 #3, July 1994

This letter writer gets it:

"The art is a different matter. Crotch shots and jutting breasts may attract the pre-teen masturbation crowd, but it doesn't make for a continuing, loyal readership among the rest of us. If your characters spent more time paying attention instead of posing with butts out, they might spend less time getting them kicked!"

I'll admit I didn't know what was going on in this comic, and only about half way through did I realize I'd been rooting for the wrong characters. But the letter writer is correct. Every goddamn chance they get, the characters are striking poses. Male and female, granted. But then there's the women's costumes, that are all some variation on that design up above. There's one character, in the very last panel, who is most definitely exposing labia majora. And somewhere, somewhen, an editor looked at it and said "Yep, print it."

*sigh*

The same letter writer acknowledges that the story being told in these pages has the potential to be a good one, but the art is just so very distracting as to all but erase any pretense of concentrating on the narrative.

I've got three comics left from Now Comics, and I think I'll polish them off. That might actually constitute my first completed publisher. Well, besides ones who only published a single comic, I suppose.

More to come...
