The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 968: Avengers v.1 #276, February 1987
So, as the cover caption box says, it's right there in the name. The Avengers. Seriously, Masters of Evil. When you beat the hell out of Jarvis, what did you think was going to happen? Every now and again a comic comes along that shows a very interesting side to the superhero - their restraint. By this I mean that we recognize the restraint with which they operate for the vast majority of the time only when it disappears. And it disappears in this issue. Not completely, but Thor is taking no shit. Just none. Same with Captain Marvel. Hell, the Wasp flies straight into the face of Mr. Hyde, no hesitation, and blasts the crap out of one of the most unbalanced and one of the strongest characters in the Marvel U. (No offense to the great Kyle McLachlan, but his version of the character didn't even come close.) But even in the midst of this, they also demonstrate the humanity that creates such restraint to begin with. Rather than a battle solely of destroying their enemies, it is also about rescuing their friends - and in showing us this, Stern and Buscema demonstrate the reason that a team of villains never works as well as a team of heroes: the heroes, more often than not, are friends. And that's a relationship that spurs one to great heights, I think.
To be continued.
