The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 935: Avengers v.1 #252, February 1985
Remember about 10 days ago, when we last left the mighty Avengers? Hercules had returned to the team, the Vision was acting very strangely, and....
Well, actually, I think that's where we left it. Today's issue is a bit of a breather. Although things do happen, it's not quite the break-neck pace that we're used to with this team. What I really, really love about this issue, and this era, is that it's just getting to the point now where we're at the beginning of mutant-hatred being a decades-long focus for the Marvel U. The Dazzler graphic novel comes out around this time, and anti-mutant hysteria in the Marvel US spirals out of control. There's at least one wonderfully touching issue of The New Mutants that comes out of this, and numerous meditations on civil rights and what it means to be human. As an onlooker notes his happiness that the Vision and Scarlet Witch's house has burned down, meaning they'll hopefully be leaving the neighbourhood, Cap turns and says this: "Mister, today somebody decided that he didn't like mutants. Tomorrow, maybe someone will decide he doesn't like Blacks...or Jews...or you! We're all in this together." While the message is slightly lessened in coming from a blond haired, blue eyed, white American, there is something here for those of us who are do not identify as People of Colour in how to act like an ally and comrade. Don't just let these comments go, and remind people that the welfare of the group is affected by the welfare of parts of the group. We're all in this together.
The final pages of the issue reintroduce a favourite character of mine, one I know becomes an integral part of the team, though his first trip back to Avengers Mansion has, thanks to the Vision's plans, unforeseen consequences. And we'll find those out tomorrow, I'm sure. To be continued.
