Not a hoax, not an imaginary story. The Avengers (well, a version of them) actually appear on Late Night with David Letterman. They are menaced by a young man who has apparently been thwarted by the Avengers in a couple of earlier issues, though they're not ones I've read thus far.
The Avengers battle strange contraptions while on the show, and in the end, Mr. Letterman himself takes down the baddie.
Not much else goes on here.
