The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1174: Filthy Animals #1, August 1997

This comic was just excellent. Hilarious, played out just like an old Looney Tunes cartoon, and the only hint of maliciousness or discord was the villainess of the plot against our long-eared porn star. Yep, that's right, it's a bout a "poon" (porn+toon) star and the women in his life.

Needless to say, I'm going to be looking for this one as well. I'm really surprised at the amount of sex positivity I've encountered in the adult comics I've read this week. I try, when I buy them, not to buy anything that look violent or disturbing, but that's not always a guarantee of positivity. So many erotic comics are so toxic that they are, I find, sadly dismissed as a genre. But there's definitely some comics out there exploring this aspect of our humanity in graphic form.

This brings us to the end of the adult comics week(ish). I've found a couple of series this week that I'd like to track down, but that's always difficult with adult comics. They've been difficult to bring into Canada for a long time, though I'm not sure if the laws have changed of late. Because of the chance of some objectionable material crossing the border, nothing labelled "adult" could be shipped to Canadian comic stores. And there's also the inherent embarrassment people feel about the subject of sex. The way I see it, though, is that stories like this make us feel less embarrassed about is, more comfortable with it, even. Our societal discomfort with sex is the source of a good many of our problems, so stories that help us remedy this are important ones.

More to come...
