The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1112: The Doom Patrol #104, June 1966

Having rescued the Challengers, having beat the Challenger-Haters, and having teamed up with the Flash, what's next for our intrepid heroes?

Marriage?

Not that I mind the occasional matrimonial moment in a comic, but this one's a bit weird. It's almost as if we're seeing a story about a marriage told by a child, or with a child's understanding of marriage, at least. Rita decides to marry Mento after Cliff, Larry, and Niles appear to be too overbearing for her (though Mento does actually kidnap her early in today's issue), then changes her mind when the guys try to stop her wedding by sending a fake telegram about a new movie role, then Rita decides she really loves Mento, and then the Brotherhood of Evil stage a fight between Mento and the DP, but Rita doesn't realize and....well, it kind of goes on like this, and ends with the two being wed.

This sets up some interesting stories to be told, including some domestic moments that have a profound effect on Gar Logan. But the wedding itself is just off. Also, how do the DP know the Justice League, the Teen Titans, and Scooter (of Swing with fame), all of whom are at the wedding? Didn't they literally just meet the Flash last month?

Ah, for the days when continuity wasn't a thing.

More to come...
