The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 405: Alpha Flight v.1 #17, December 1984

Back to Alpha Flight, though, really, we're going even further back to The X-Men, and "Weapon Alpha"'s first attempt to recover Weapon X.

Let me say that the thing that struck me the most about this comic was the insane amount of dialogue. I mean, we're talking Kevin Smith levels of word bubbles, chock full of prose, and crowding the characters out of their own comic in some instances. It's a tough line to straddle, though. You want there to be action, but action can't be all there is. Ask Image in the 90s. Plus we're witnessing a team dealing with the sudden death of its leader, so it really is mostly going to be talking, figuring out what comes next. Much like any of us after a traumatic event like this. Wolverine comforts Heather, and then he and Puck convince Ms. Hudson to become Alpha Flight's leader. Which I was thrilled to see, because here's the thing: this series is growing on me. I've missed reading these characters, even if they are occasionally long-winded and hyperbolic. They're superheroes from the 80s, pre-Dark Knight and Watchmen, pulling on the prime time soap opera aesthetic that was ridiculously popular at the time. They deal with their darkness not through psychosis, but through connecting and disconnecting with the people around them. Again, much like any of us.

Next issue's cover has Heather holding the Guardian battle suit up to herself in front of a mirror. I'm quite excited to see how she becomes the Vindicator we all (well, some of us, anyway) know her as today. More tomorrow!
