The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 1278: All Canadian Beaver Comix, 1973

As I delve back into the underground, we'll have to hide this particular cover.

An amusing anecdote I share with people is that the name of the local newspaper in the town I grew up in is The Oakville Beaver. I kind of love how hilarious this has become, and how staunchly Oakville has stuck to it. To my knowledge, The Beav, as we used to call it, is still in publication.

And, of course, the Canadian underground couldn't help but take advantage of the euphemism.

What stands out to me in this comic is a double page Harold Hedd strip about homosexuality. I'm going to be presenting this comic at a talk on queer comics I'm giving at Pride this year, and I think I'll just post it here. A reminder: this was written and drawn in a world in which gay men were not only vilified and persecuted, but in which it had only been legal for about 4 years to do the things depicted in the comic. This attempt at showing that a gay relationship is also a loving one, is quite wonderful.
