The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 900: Doctor Strange v.1 #60, August 1983

Day 900 dawns on Avengers Mansion non too soon, given it's under attack by the legions of Dracula!

A better crossover than the previous one with Fantastic Four, and the reason for that is that Roger Stern writes both titles, and Avengers penciller Al Milgrom is the editor of Doctor Strange. Thus, this feels like a completely natural and unforced crossover. It's a side story in the Avengers soap opera, in which only a few of the World's Mightiest Heroes are present for the siege, but they prove that Mightiest epithet by virtue of their actions. You don't get onto the team if you're a lightweight. Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel hold the line while the good Doctor banishes the object of Dracula's design: the Darkhold.

This book featured prominently in last season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which makes one wonder if we might be seeing vampires and such in the MCU before long.

The other nice thing about this issue is that the Avengers didn't really know what was going on, aside from there being a small army of homeless people and street gangs attempting to enter their headquarters, accompanied by a swarm of rats. But they trusted Doctor Strange enough to simply take him at his word that they had to fight and hard. That level of respect is one reason I've never really understood not having Doctor Strange on the Avengers. He's the strongest wizard on the planet. Surely that rates a seat at the big round table? It did, eventually, in Bendis's New Avengers, but that seems a long time coming. And, from the looks of things, he'll at the very least be accompanying the Avengers in their next foray. Whether or not he'll join is an interesting question.

The other thing I realized when I read this comic, and yesterday's, is that Monica Rambeau is from Louisiana, which means she might speak with a Southern accent. I'd never thought of that before.

To be continued.
