The 40 Years of Comics Project - Day 301: Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds #36, June 1963

The lead story in this comic, entitled "Dominant Species!", revolves around a rescue attempt by space marines of a stranded crew member on a hostile alien world. After a brutal battle, and after capturing the alien general, it is revealed that so much effort has gone into rescuing Officer Crandall because she's the only woman in the space army, and she's hot.

I'm not kidding.

The Sixties really were a different planet, weren't they?

This comic is a lovely (a qualified lovely, though) example of the sort of neutering comics underwent under the Comics Code Authority. I imagine if this had been published by early EC, there'd be much more blood and gore, and the twists and surprises would have been much more shocking. However, coming from the time it does, this one's fairly gentle with its stories. Only one, "Crew," really, actually produced a shiver, and I think it might make it into the next installment of "Giant Box of Comics Breaks the Law." A nice little piece of science fiction, and a couple of really chilling panels close to the end.

Aside from that, though, I've not much to say about the content. But, as I'm constantly saying, this comic goes to show that the dollar bin is a fantastic place to find the weirdest, most obscure titles. I'd never have picked this up if it was in better shape (even my old price guide says that a "fine" copy goes for about $12), but I'm glad to drop a buck for a look at a weird, horrendously sexist, but strangely vanilla piece of old school Sixties science fiction.

One last little bit from the dollar bin tomorrow, and then I think it's probably time to dig out some Christmas comics, at least for a couple of days. See you tomorrow.
